Sûryavarman II (Surya : soleil) s'emparera du trône en tuant son oncle, roi et frère de Jayavarman Vl. Reconnu comme "grand vassal" par l'empereur de Chine, Suryavarman II entreprendra l'unification du pays et étendra l'empire khmer jusqu'en Malaisie, en Birmanie et en Thaïlande, avant de subir un échec cuisant au Vietnam. Il se distinguera sur le plan religieux en adoptant le culte de Vishnu.
