Vicente Lopez y Portana began studying in Valencia at the age of thirteen and received a scholarship to train in Madrid. After returning home in 1790, he became the vice-director at his painting alma mater.
Biography
Lopez was summoned by the court of Spanish king, Ferdinand VII in 1814 and was later appointed first court painter alongside Goya. He lived in Madrid for the rest of his life, painting portraits of almost all the notable Spanish figures of his time.
