Karl Stauffer-Bern von Otto Brahm
Born in : Suisse - 1857 / Dead in : Florence, 1891
Despite his few years, Karl Stauffer-Bern led a very eventful life and emerged as one of Germany's finest etchers of the late nineteenth century. He first studied art at the Academy of Munich, under Loefftz. At this time he also took individual instructions in etching techniques under his friend and fellow artist, Peter Halm. By 1880 Karl Stauffer-Bern had moved to Berlin to complete his studies and open a studio.

Biography
In the following year Max Klinger (1857-1920) also moved to Berlin. These two great, young etchers soon became close friends. During his career Karl Stauffer-Bern etched the portraits of such famous contemporaries as Adolph Menzel, Peter Halm and Gustav Freytag. He also became an influential teacher in etching and in 1885 began instructing his most famous student in this field, Kathe Kollwitz.
