Le sentier is the oldest textile neighborhood in Paris, north of the 3e near Réaumur-Sébastopol. Most of the stores do wholesale only ("vente en gros"), and aren't kidding about it. But a smattering indicate in the window that they do retail ("vente au detail"), and you'll get some of the most fashionable items on the planet, hot off the press. In any case, it's worth strolling through for both the historical value and the fashion preview combined. It's definitely one of the best places for shoe fetishists. It's also right next to the oldest Jewish neighborhood in Paris (rue des Rosiers), and the newest gay one (rue St Croix de la Bretonnerie), so you can roll several interests into one afternoon. | | The Sentier : History | |
C'est au coeur du Sentier que l'on découvre l'un des plus vieux quartiers de Paris, aujourd'hui appelé quartier du Caire. Le nom des rues, rue d'Aboukir, ou rue du Nil, évoque l'expédition militaire de Napoléon en Egypte, au cours de laquelle il emmenera des dizaines d'artistes et de savants français, dont Champollion. Ce dernier déchiffrera les hiéroglyphes.
Ce quartier, qui hébergeait la Cour des Miracles, avait la sinistre réputation d'être, jusqu'en 1667, le royaume des voleurs et des mendiants. La Police n'osait pas s'y aventurer. Cet endroit inspirera à Victor Hugo certaines scènes de Notre-Dame de Paris. Selon la légende, un miracle guérissait chaque soir l'un des nombreux invalides transformés en mendiants. Cette cour était située dans l'actuelle rue du Nil. Les truands, qui élisaient un roi, seront définitivement chassés en 1667 par le fougueux lieutenant-général de la police La Reynie. | | | |
