This lion is closely resembles one of the Fourth Century B.C. from Cnidos on the Aegean coast of Anatolia. In Egyptian art the pose goes back to the Seventeenth Dynasty. A Greek inscription on the base of the lion reads : "Epiteka set up (this monument) for Thenopheros for a good purpose".
