 | Description | |
This statue is one of the six colossal granite sphinxes whose fragments were discovored near Hatshepsut's funerary temple at Deir el Bahri. These sphinxes may have been positioned on the lower terrace of the temple, three on either side of processional way. The inscription between the forelegs, which faces left, indicates that the sphinx originally stood on the southern side of the processional route. The restored dedication reads : "The King of Upper and Lower Egypt, Maatkara, beloved of Amun who resides in Djeser-Djeseru and given life forever".
