 | Description | |
Only few fragments of this sculpture have been preserved. They are presently mounted in a cast of a virtually complete mate in Cairo. The two small statues evidently formed a pair and may have been positioned on the upper newel posts of the lower ramp of Hatshepsut's temple. A uncommon feature of these sphinxes is that only the face, adorned by the royal beard and uraeus, is human. It is framed by a lion's mane and ears. Traces of paint indicate that the body was painted a tawny yellow and the mane and beard blue.
