Item 13 on 80
Objets d'Art
Object of worship (Calice)

Vitrine : V01

Area related
Attarouthi (Syrie)

Description

The stars probably represent the star of Bethlehem that announced Christ's birth, the crosses the cross upon which he died. They are symbols of the birth and the death of Christ, events commemorated in the Eucharistic service for which this chalice was made. The generous size of this chalice is evidence of the large number of Christians residing around Attarouthi prior to the rise of Islam.
