Byzantine artists often design such icons so that the two sides relate each other. On the front of the pendant, is the Virgin Mary Hodegetria, an icon type in which the Virgin Mary holds the Christ child in her left hand while gesturing toward him with her right. On the reverses, John the Baptist raises his arms as if venerating Christ through the pendant.
