 | Description | |
The case contains nine medallions from the Djumati Monastery (Georgia), with their identifying Greek inscriptions, from a group of twelve that ounce surrounded an icon of the Archangel Gabriel. The medallions have been sent as gift from the Byzantine court to the neighbouring Christian state of Georgia. They are among the finest surviving examples of cloisonné enamel work.
In this technique, compartments or cells are formed from thin strips of gold or silver, filled with colored glass paste, and then fired at high temperature until the melting glass forms a solid surface. As it did here, the process often requires several firings to fill the cells before the final polishing.
