 | Description | |
Although the clock is signed by the Viennese clockmaker Caspar Behiam, similar clocks are known to have been made by the Augsburg clockmaker Jeremias Metzger, who may have been the actual maker of this one.
The front has dial (part of which is missing) for showing the hours, the position of the sun, the day of the year, together with various saint's days. The back has a clock-driven astrolabe showing the apparent motions of fourteen stars in the northern hemisphere. The procession depicted on the base is base on an engraving by Hans Beham, and hunting scenes are based on engravings by Virgil Solis. The finial is a late-nineteenth-century replacement.
The movement of iron bears maker's initials : CB. The clock is signed and dated : ME FECIT CHAS/PARVIS./BOHEMVS/IN VIAENNA. AVS/TRIA ANOON/1568.
