Between the eight and the sixth centuries B.C., elaborated bronze vessels were among the pre-eminent creations of Greek artists. This foot was probably one of the three supporting a large basin. Mythological creatures such as the griffin and the sphinx should be understood as guardian figures not simply decoration.
