Description   

Le Pactole qui coulait à Sardes charriait des pépites d'or, ou plutôt d'électrum. Le monnayage lydien sera l'un des premiers du monde grec. Il débutera au milieu du VIIème siècle avant Jésus-Christ et deviendra important et diversifié sous Crésus.

Le roi perse Cyrus s'emparera de Sardes en 546 avant Jésus-Christ. Il épargnera la vie de Crésus et conservera son système monétaire et son monnayage. Le demi statère d'argent (ou sicle) représentait la vingtième partie du statère d'or léger de 8,17 grammes. La darique et la sicle perse remplaceront le monnayage de Crésus en 510 avant Jésus-Christ.
