 | Description | |
This picture was painted in Rome, but despite the costumes and setting, the source of the iconography is a 17th century Dutch painting by Frans van Mieiris the Elder, The Broken Eggs (Hermitage) which Greuze knew through engraving. The picture was praised in Rome, and it attracted favourable comment when exhibited in Paris in the Salon on 1757. Exhibited with the present was a pendant, The Neapolitan gesture of 1757 (Worcester Art Museum)
