L'identité de Raphaël, figuré au premier plan de ce double portrait, est incertaine. Les inventaires du XVIIème siècle mentionnent les noms de Pordenone et de Pontormo. La physionomie de ces deux personnages, connue par d'autres portraits parfaitement identifiés, est très différente. Certains avancent le nom de Giulio Romano, d'autres ceux de Branconio dell'Aquila, exécuteur testamentaire du peintre et d'Antonio da Sangallo le Jeune.
