Courbet's model for this picture is the same woman who posed for Woman with a Parrot (1866) and The Young Bather (1866). Her identity is unknown. This work of 1868 combines two subjects, the female nude and the sea, that interested the artist intensely in the late 1860s. Like other variations on the theme by fashionable academic painters such as Paul Baudry and Alexandre Cabanel, its content is overtly erotic.
