Description

Courbet's model for this picture is the same woman who posed for Woman in Waves(1868) and The Young Bather (1866). Her identity is unknown.

When this painting was shown in the Salon of 1866, the critics censured Courbet's "lack of taste" as well as his model "ungainly" pose and "disheveled hair". Their comments made clear that Courbet's woman was perceived as provocative. This picture, however, was admired by contemporary artists. Cézanne seems to have carried a small photograph of it his wallet, and Manet began his version of the subject in 1866.
