 | Description | |
This Irishwoman is Johanna Hiffernan, mistress of the artist James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903), and later, of Courbet. In 1865, Whistler, Monet, and Courbet painted together at the French seaside resort of Trouville, where Jo posed for Courbet. This is one of four versions of the painting; it is both a portrait and the artist's personal interpretation of the traditional theme of Vanity.
