Technical examination has revealed that Manet scrapped odd and repainted at least twice before, abandoning this portrait of his wife, Suzanne Leenhoff (1830-1906), the Dutch pianist whom he married in 1863. Because it is unfinished, the portrait is difficult to date, but most scholars relate it to Manet's work of the 1860s.
