The first Iranian medal was the Hursid (Sun) instituted in 1807 by the Qajar shah Fath Ali, following the treaty signed by France and Iran. The Sir-i Hursid (Lion and Sun) medal inspired by the French Legion d'Honneur was instituted in 1814. The medal was presented to Abdülhamid II.
