Description

This sarcophagus was never used by Nectanebo II, last native ruler of Egypt. He fled to Nubia following the Persian invasion in 343 BC. It was later used as a ritual bath in the Attarin Mosque in the former church od St Athanasius in Alexandria. It is inscribed with extracts from the Book of Amduat.
This sarcophagus was collected by the Napoleonic Expedition to Egypt, and came to the British Museum in 1802 as a result of the Treaty of Alexandria.
