Description

The story of Brother Philippe's geese was drawn by La Fontaine from Boccaccio. Philippe, having dedicated himself and his son to God, retires to a mountain cave where the boy grows up free from temptation. When, at twenty, the youth emerges, Philippe truthfully explains to him all that he sees until they come to a party of young women. The umbrella casts delicate shadows on the pale faces of the women, while the young man's response leaves little to doubt.
