 | Description | |
The painting and its pendant, "Venus Consoling Love" (National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.), were commissioned by Madame de Pompadour for her Château de Bellevue. While this is not a portrait of Madame de Pompadour, she had played the title role in "The Toilet of Venus," a play staged at Versailles in 1750.
