 | Description | |
Tulips in a Vase demonstrates the artist's interest in the purely physical, optical qualities of painting. The effect of Cézanne's active, vigorous sense of order in the application of each individual brushstroke is such that the eye is continually drawn to the painted surface. The tension between this attraction and the tendency for the eye to respond to the illusion of the vase of tulips is one of Cézanne's foremost accomplishments.
