Sisley painted this scene within walking distance of his house in Marly-le-Roi, a tiny village at the edge of splendid 17th-century gardens constructed for Louis XIV. Unlike his fellow Impressionists, who often painted river scenes alive with the movement of sailboats and urban strollers, Sisley was interested in capturing ordinary daily activities. He chose as his subject the dredging of the Seine for sand on an overcoast afternoon, allowing the blue of water to intensify the beauty of landscape.
