 | Description | |
The setting is a terrace of the Restaurant Fournaise, an establishment in the village of Châtou, on the Seine, where Renoir had previously executed The Rowers' Lunch, among other works.
Renoir sent at least twenty-seven paintings, including this one, to the 1882 Impressionist exhibition. Represented are two young women of different generations; the older, formally dressed, poses placidly before the landscape backdrop of suburban Châtou and appears to ignore the presence of her younger sibling, who seems to have just dashed into the picture. Renoir's choice of colors and the juxtaposition of solid, almost life-sizes figures against a landscape that is a realm of pure vision and fantasy are striking.
