The artist, who presumably portrayed himself here, has not been identified, although he included the monogram MN above the window. The portrait style, the placement of the sitter in a room looking out on a landscape, and the use of linden wood for the panel all suggest a south German origin. While the portrait displays the awkwardness of the work of a very young artist, it nevertheless conveys the energy and inquisitiveness of the emerging Renaissance in Germany.
