Description

The story of Saint George, the model Christian knight, rescuing the princess from a dragon that threatened her father's kingdom was a favorite during the late Middle Ages. Smaller narrative panels of the martyrdom of Saint George, now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris, formerly flanked the Art Institute's panel to a retable honoring the saint. Martorell's painting reveals the combined influence of Italian and northern European art that was characteristic of the port city of Barcelona, where he worked.
