Description

In the early fifteenth century, painting was not yet the dominant artistic medium it would become, and carved wood or metalwork altarpieces were more suited to contemporary taste. Indeed, the gold background, rows of saints, and limited spatial setting of this small portable altarpiece imitate the rich effects of gilding and polychromy typical of more costly carved altarpieces. The triptych would presumably have been set up on a small altar and opened during the celebration of the Mass, the depiction of Christ's sacrifice on the cross being an appropriate accompaniment to its liturgical reenactment.
