 | Description | |
This is one of eight scenes from the life of the Virgin that decorated the inside of the wings of Koerbecke's masterpiece, the great high altar for Marienfeld abbey in northwest Germany. The inclusion here of the arms of the abbot, the Cistercian order, and the diocese of Münster on the cushions behind Mary and the archangel Gabriel underscores the importance and splendor of the Annunciation scene in particular.
