One of the greatest fifteenth-century Netherlandish painters, Van der Weyden combined masterful elegance of design with a sure sense of the religious emotion of his time. Half-length images of the Virgin and Child, such as this one, served as portraits of the holy figures and provided a focus for private devotion. Van der Weyden's treatment of the subject is tender yet dignified. He stressed Christ's humanity through the Virgin's nurturing gesture, but also exalted mother and child through the regal associations of such details as Mary's jeweled robe and the velvet cloth of honor behind her.
