This picture seems at first glance to glance to be an independent devotional work. However, the little figures in the upper corners cut off by the frame indicate that it was once part of a larger work that has been cut apart. In fact, it was originally the center of an altarpiece and was flanked by eight much smaller scenes from the life of Saint John the Evangelist. The woman who kneels to the right of the cross presumably commissioned the altarpiece.
