Venetian-born, Crivelli absorbed the artistic culture of his native city, but was also decisively influenced by concurrent developments in nearby Padua, particularly by the expressive sculpture of Donatello (1386-1466) and the paintings of Andrea Mantegna (1431-1506). His work is characterized by brittle, slender figures, full of emotion, that are rendered in meticulous detail. Crivelli left Venice, never to return, shortly after 1460; he eventually settled at Ascoli but received considerable commissions from the entire surrounding province.
"The Crucifixion, a relatively late work, exemplifies many features of Crivelli's unique style; the figure of Christ writhes upon the cross, the tightly tendons of his arms and the knotted muscles of his legs and stomach creating an impression of great tension. In the rocky, arid landscape, barren trees symbolize the dead Tree of Life which Chrtist's sacrifice will revivify. The city gate of Jerusalem is visible in the distance; contrary to reality, so is the Mediterranean Sea.
Scholars have recently suggested that "The Crucifixion" was the central element of a six-part altarpiece commissioned in 1487 for the church of San Lorenzo in Trosino. The Castel Trosino altarpiece was in place until 1858; by 1868, "The Crucifixion had reached England. Acquired in 1929, it was the first Italian painting purchased by the Art Institute.
