In this small picture, the composition of a formal public altarpiece has been adapted for private devotion. The artist may have derived the arrangement of the the enthroned Virgin and Child from a lost work by Duccio di Buoninsegna (c.1255-1319), the great pioneer of Sienese painting. It can be associated with Ugolino di Nerio, one of Duccio's most talented followers, on the basis of the facial types and refined color harmonies.
Hinge marks on the left edges of the panel serve as evidence that it was once attached to another panel to form a diptych, or small portable altarpiece. It must have belonged to the Dominican friar who is depicted, on a smaller scale, kneeling humbly before the Virgin and Child just below the black-and-white robed figure of Saint Dominic, the founder of the Dominican order. The way Saint Dominic gazes out of the picture, his hand raised to bless the prayers of the diptych's owner, further personalizes the image.
