Description

Sano di Pietro was a follower (and probably a pupil) of the great Sienese master Sassetta (Stefanno di Giovanni, c. 1400-1450). In the course of a long career, Sano's lyrical but conservative art perpetuated the tradition if Sienese painting initiated by early fourteenth-century artists such as Simone Martini (1285?-1344). Sano produced a large number of small panels intended for private devotion, such as the Art Institute's pentagonal picture.

Sano repeated the composition seen in the Art Institute panel, with minor changes, on several occasions. Depending on the preferences of his patron, the artist substituted various saints on either side of the Virgin and Child. Although depicted together, Saint Jerome, who holds a pen, and Saint Bernardino lived a millennium apart. Jerome translated the Hebrew Bible into Latin in the fifth century; Bernardino, a celebrated Franciscan preacher in Siena, was canonized in 1450, probably just before the picture was executed.

The painting focuses on the tender embrace of the Virgin and Child. In One hand, Jesus holds the apple of humanity's Fall, symbol of his future as the Redeemer; He makes the gesture of blessing with the other. "His halo is inscribed [EG]O SUM L[UX MUNDI]-"I am the light of the World" (John 8:12). The Virgin's blue mantle is decorated with a star-bust; on her halo, the inscription (from Luke 1:28) reads AVE GRATIA PLENA DOM-"Hail, full of grace, the Lords [is with thee]."
