Description

This crucifix is one of the most important Italian works of the thirteenth century in a public collection in the United States. It is rare to find such an early, large-scale painting outside of Italy. The name given to the artist derives from a very similar work by the same hand now in the Museo del Bigallo in Florence.

Although the figures of Christ, the Virgin, and Saint John retain the abstracted linear patterning of Byzantine art, the more natural system of highlighting was a new stylistic development. Accompanying them are angels in the terminals to Christ's left and right. At the top of the cross is a depiction of Christ the Redeemer. Below him, in the rectangular "cimasa", the Virgin is shown again, this time between two angels.
