 | Description | |
Scorel was instrumental in bringing the innovations of the Italian Renaissance to Holland. Because this painting is on a poplar panel, common for Italian paintings - as opposed to the oak customary in the Netherlands - it must have been painted on Scorel's Italian trip. Its elongated format and secular subject relate to types of painted decoration found in Italian homes - it may indeed have been set into a piece of furniture or wall paneling. It is remarkable as a document of Scorel's early development and as one of the earliest secular landscapes by a Northern artist.
