Description

Aertsen worked in Amsterdam and Antwerp producing altarpieces, designs for stained glass, and paintings of secular subjects. He is probably best known for his pioneering representations of still - life subjects, especially realistic depictions of foodstuffs, which he combined with biblical themes to convey a moralizing message. The direct, fresh approach evident in this rare portrait by him is related to the realism of his kitchen and market pictures.
