 | Description | |
Cranach was a friend of Martin Luther and a firm supporter of the Reformation. His crowded Calvary scene is a representation of Lutheran concepts of faith and choice. The friends of Christ, including the swooning Virgin and other believers, such as the converted centurion, are shown to the left of the cross. At the right are Christ's condemners and the cynics who rejected him, such as the soldiers who cast dice to divide up his clothing.
