 | Description | |
The style of this painting, its support of fir wood, and its history in Austrian collections indicate that it was painted by the young Dutchman Jan Van Scorel as he traveled over the Alps on his way to Italy. Hence, it is one of the earliest known works by an artist whose first biographer, Karel Van Mander, praised him as a lantern - bearer who brought the Renaissance style back to the Netherlands. The delicate colors and vivid characterization of the figures in the "Adoration of the Magi" testify to the mastery the young painter had already achieved before he reached Italy.
