 | Description | |
According to tradition, the birth of Christ took place in a stable that had been constructed within the ruins of King David's palace in Bethlehem. In this painting, the garlands, the architectural ornament, and the tumbling musical angels add an exuberant Renaissance accent to what is still an essentially late - medieval scene. Oostsanen was the first painter documented as working in Amsterdam. In the early sixteenth century, this Dutch city was just beginning to rise as a commercial center, but was still smaller and less cosmopolitan than Bruges, Brussels, or Antwerp, located in the southern Netherlands.
