The Master of Moulins's cool, elegant figures and Italianate architecture reflect the taste of his French royal patrons. The Annunciation probably made up the extreme right portion of a horizontal altarpiece that also included a painting, now in London, depicting the meeting of the Virgin's parents, Joachim and Anna, at the Golden Gate. The form of the altarpiece may explain the perspective of the Virgin's room and the way in Gabriel and Mary seem to gaze past each other.
