After the death of Tintoretto, Palma became the dominant painter in Venice, heir to the tradition of the great sixteenth - century triumvirate of Titian, Tintoretto, and Veronese. Palma was a student of Titian when the master died and reportedly completed his teacher's last painting. Later he adopted a more realistic style, based on the example of Jacopo Bassano (1517/18-1592), as well as the fluency of Tintoretto (1518-1594).
The Art Institute's "portrait of a gentleman" was long attributed to Bassano; only recently was it recognized as an example of Palma's mature portrait style. The demonstrative gesture, the lighting of the face, the wrinkles around the eyes, and the highlights of the drapery are features found in many of the works Palma produced between 1584 and 1592. The portrait successfully conveys the impression of a specific moment of action: the sitter's mouth is open, as if speaking to the viewer about the letter in his right hand to which he points with his left.
The sitter is thus far unidentified. He wears an informal gown with hanging sleeves, tied at waist with a sash. Such gowns became fashionable toward the end of the sixteenth century, particularly among artists, writers, and musicians.
