 | Description | |
Here Millet focuses on a dramatic moment in the daily work of a cooper, or barrel maker. With a mallet and wedge, the cooper tightens the hoops that hold the barrel together. The man's intense concentration, the contrasting areas of light and dark, and the simple composition result in one of Millet's most memorable images of rural labor. For an even more heroic evocation of rural work, see Millet's "Man with a Hoe", nearby. | Item(s) related | |
