 | Description | |
Before achieving international success as a painter of peasant life, Millet earned his living as a portraitist. Depicted here is Louise-Antoinette Feuardent, wife of his lifelong friend Félix-Bien-aimé. The likeness contains the limited use of color and rhythmic clarity of outline typical of traditional portraiture, yet it is painted with a looseness of style that anticipates Millet's mature masterpiece, "Man with a hoe", which also hangs in this gallery.
