Godward specialized in scenes of young women in idyllic settings that evoke Classical antiquity. Posed on Mediterranean courtyards or terraces, his women were inevitably shown in various states of romantic expectation, dreamy absorption, or erotic playfulness. Godward here amplified the sexualized tone by concentrating on the sensuous textures of luxurious materials, reveling in the contrasts of marble, tile, silk, fur, and flesh.
