Description

The culture and landscape of North Africa became a source of inspiration in Delacroix's work after an enlightening trip to Morocco in 1832. For the artist, the horsemen he encountered embodied a nobility of spirit and strength of will that was traditionally associated in art with the heroes of antiquity. Here he distilled from memory and imagination a highly poetic view of a dashing rider-a vision heightened by the painting's dynamic composition, bold brushwork, and intense, contrasting.
