The ancient city of Pompeii, destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79, was first excavated in 1748. Kobke visited the site in 1840 and made detailed studies that he used the following year to create this view in his Copenhagen studio. Creeping wildflowers and grazing goats lend a pastoral atmosphere to the ruins.
