 | Description | |
In this remarkable sketch, drawn curtains and a statue of Venus frame a dramatically lit interior reminiscent of a stage or an artist's studio. Géricault presented an erotic scene without the more usual moralizing or sentimental justification. His depiction of a contemporary event in a timeless setting historicizes the present, making modern life appropriate for high art. Discovered in 1992, "Three Lovers" is Géricault's only known surviving painting of a subject he often drew.
