Description

During the harsh winter of 1860-70, Monet and his friend Camille Pissarro explored local landscape subjects, including this view of the road where Pissarro lived, Monet broad application of paint captures the patchy forms and reflections of melting snow, an effect the artist had been developing since 1865. His spontaneous brushwork and rich working of the clearing sky, especially the saturated orange hues, invest the empty street with powerful drama.
